Stop wearing hats; they will cause you to go bald! Is this a myth or reality? Can wearing a hat result in baldness?

I’ve also heard that hair loss is related to age, that as you get older, you lose your hair; while this may be true, I’ve also seen younger people who are bald.

“Hair loss, also known as alopecia or baldness, refers to a loss of hair from part of the head or body. Typically at least the head is involved.” – Wikipedia

What exactly causes scalp hair loss or baldness?

There are numerous causes of hair loss, some of which are a result of a medical condition, while others are unrelated to any medical condition.

Some of the most common causes of hair loss are as follows:

–      Genetics – Androgenetic Alopecia, also known as male or female pattern baldness, is caused by the individual’s genes. For men, the pattern is hair loss, particularly on the crown of the head, whereas for women, the hair becomes thinner. Genetic baldness is caused more by age; as people age, they lose their hair. This condition is treatable medically.

–      Telogen effluvium – This is a temporary condition of hair loss caused by childbirth, severe stress, weight loss, thyroid malfunction, or another medication that may affect the hair cycle. This condition is also treatable medically.

–      Anagen effluvium – This is a situation involving a phase of the hair cycle in which severe hair loss occurs as a result of certain medical conditions such as fungal infection, radiation, chemotherapy, and autoimmune disease. When the procedure is completed, the hair usually grows back.

–      Pregnancy – Hair loss during pregnancy or after delivery is caused by a drop in estrogen levels in some women, and it is usually temporary because the hair grows back as soon as the level of estrogen returns to normal, which usually takes about a year.

–      Ringworm – This is a fungal infection on the scalp that causes baldness in the affected area of the head. This infection causes itching, blisters, and red patches on the affected area, usually in a ring shape. Sometimes the infection resolves on its own, while other times antifungal therapy is required.

Other causes of hair loss include the use of birth control pills in women, an imbalance in nutrition, medication, and some lifestyle changes, among others.

There was no mention of hat-wearing as a cause of hair loss. So why is it assumed that baldness or hair loss is caused by wearing a hat?

This could be related to the fact that bald people wear hats, and the reason they wear hats is to cover the bald area of their head, which some people mistake as the reason these people are bald.
